Empty Bowls serves art, soup for needy

Empty Bowls gives people a chance to enjoy lunch and leave with a hand-crafted item while helping the hungry.

Local artist donated their time and talent to create handmade bowls. The ceramics program at Youngstown State University hosted open studio workshops throughout the year where students and local volunteers could create and surface the bowls.

Attendees at the event Saturday at McDonough Museum of Art, 525 Wick Ave., Youngstown, can choose an empty bowl in exchange for a donation of $20 and enjoy a lunch of locally made soup, bread, beverage and a cookie donated by area restaurants and bakeries.

Businesses providing food and desserts include Aladdin’s Eatery, Antone’s Kitchen, Magic Tree Eatery & Pub, V2 Wine Bar and Trattoria, The Bred Chef and Classic Bakery.

The event will benefit Rescue Mission of the Valley, and the Empty Bowls is part of an international project to fight hunger.

Lunch seatings are 11 a.m. and 12:30 and 2 p.m. Saturday, and meals can be eaten at the McDonough or purchased to go. Tickets are $20 in advance and are available online at emptybowlsysu.eventbrite.com. Tickets purchased the day of the event are $30. Seating is limited.

The event is sponsored by YSU, Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication, Department of Art, the McDonough, Scianna Hospitality and Janine’s Peace of Mind Cleaning LLC.
