Busy Saturday for music in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — A free music and arts festival isn’t the only thing going on in downtown Youngstown on Saturday.

Along with the 10th edition of Federal Frenzy, which has drawn large crowds to downtown in the past, there are two other sold-concerts happening within blocks of the festival.

Judas Priest will fill the Covelli Centre, its third sell-out at the Youngstown arena since 2018. And the “American Made” Country Music Songwriter Series concert featuring Liberty native Bob DiPiero sold out weeks in advance at the DeYor Performing Arts Center’s Ford Family Recital Hall.

Judas Priest still features Rob Halford, lead vocals, and Ian Hill, bass and backing vocals, both live and on record.

Glenn Tipton, guitar, backing vocals and keyboards, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a decade ago and no longer tours regularly with the group, but he still is involved in creating new music with the band.

Halford and Hill are joined in the current unit by Scott Travis (drummer since 1989) and guitar players Richie Faulkner and Andy Sneap.

Tipton was involved in the creation of the band’s latest album, “Invincible Shield,” released in March.

According to Faulkner in an interview with Detroit radio station WRIF, “If he couldn’t play when we were writing, if he had an idea that he couldn’t play that day, he’d kind of talk to me and walk me through how it was supposed to go and I’d play it. And it was the same in the recording process, really. If he could play the song, he’d play it. If he couldn’t, then I’d take over and that’s how we did it … For us, it was important that he was involved. We had his mind involved, we had his creative mind involved, and that’s part of the reason it makes it Judas Priest.”

The U.S. tour started last week, and Judas Priest has been playing three songs from the new album as well as such old favorites as “Living After Midnight,” “Breaking the Law,” “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'” and “Hell Bent for Leather.”

Sabaton opens the 7:30 p.m. show.

DiPiero’s songwriter series has been a popular annual fundraiser for COMPASS Family and Community Services in the past as DiPiero — who has written more than 1,200 and had 15 songs he wrote or co-wrote reach No. 1 on the Billboard country singles chart – and his songwriting buddies perform and share the stories about what inspired the songs.

For what is being billed as the final “American Made” concert, DiPiero brought in a ringer — his friend, Vince Gill.

DiPiero and Gill collaborated on Gill’s hit “Worlds Apart.” Gill has won 22 Grammy Awards in his career as a solo artist, and these days he’s playing to crowds at least 30 times larger than the Ford Family Recital Hall’s capacity as a member of The Eagles.

Also on the bill Saturday will be Blessing Offor, who appeared on NBC’s “The Voice” and Bravo’s “Platinum Hit.”

With downtown parking at a premium, Federal Frenzy organizers are encouraging attendees to park at Youngstown State University’s Wick Avenue parking deck and take advantage of free shuttle service between the parking deck and the festival from 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday.
