Canfield trustees seek to deter speeding

Considering more speed tables

CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — After installing two speed tables on Tyler Drive last year, trustees here are discussing installing them in other areas of the township.

A speed table is a rise in the road surface to slow down motorists. It resembles a large square or table in the road and is often installed at intersections on streets where drivers tend to speed. Vehicles traveling the speed limit can safely move over the speed table, but speeders could experience their vehicle bottoming out.

“We’ve had interest in placing them on Villa Rosa,” trustee Brian Governor said at a meeting earlier this week. “They do work on slowing down traffic.”

The other positive is snow plows can go over speed tables easily. Unlike speed bumps and humps, speed tables don’t have to be removed for winter plowing.

The two speed tables on Tyler Drive went through the first winter, according to township road Supervisor Bob Burkett, but they came out with a little problem.

“The corners are cracking,” he said. “And we didn’t have a harsh winter.”

He said the plow trucks were out five times for the season, so there was not a lot of plowing done on the new speed tables to cause the cracking corners.

Governor said the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office has responded to the request to deal with speeding. He said they are setting up radar and writing tickets.

In other business, trustees:

• Approved a motion to have Everbrite Inc. of North Jackson perform the 2024 street sweeping for $15,000.

• Agreed to participate in the 2024 Ohio Department of Transportation road salt contract. Under the contract, the township will have to purchase 600 tons, plus 31 tons for the school district. Since the salt dome is at capacity, the purchased salt will be delivered in 2025. The price will not be known for several months.

• Agreed to donate $1,000 to American Legion Post 177 for the upcoming Memorial Day service.
