Salem group announces preservation events

Salem Preservation members have several events planned in May for National Preservation Month.

The celebration of preservation will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday with guided tours of the 103-year-old Salem Golf Club, 1967 S. Lincoln Ave., Salem, which the group saved from being turned into condominiums or mixed-use residential properties.

Tours will include the 18-hole golf course, swimming pool, courts, clubhouse and details on future plans. After the tour, there will be a social hour with hors d’oeuvres, refreshments and a cash bar.

Tickets are $15 and are available online at salem preservationsociety.org and at A Touch of Gracious Living Floral & Gifts, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and Salem Golf Club. For more information, call 330-337-6829.

The Historic Homes Tour of South Lincoln Avenue is planned from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 18. The area is recognized by the State Historic Preservation Office as the longest “intact” Grand Avenue in Ohio. More than 70 homes on the avenue are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Advance tickets for the tour are $15 and are available at A Touch of Gracious Living Floral & Gifts. Tickets also will be available on site the day of the event. For more information, call 234-575-0068.

The third event is the grand opening and dedication of McCulloch Park on East State Street at 5:30 p.m. May 22. The park stands on the site of McCulloch’s one of Salem’s early 20th century department stores.

The dedication will include food, music and words of thanks from those involved in the rebuilding of the park. It is open to the public and all those who have donated in any manner to this outstanding facility.
