Compass West shooting case has additional indictments

AUSTINTOWN — A young man accused in a fatal Austintown shooting has been bound over to adult court and an alleged accomplice has been indicted on new charges, including murder.

Records show that Ethan Richmond, 18, of Austintown, was indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury Thursday on one felony count each of voluntary manslaughter and felonious assault, each with a 3-year firearm specification attached.

Richmond was 17 when he was arrested last summer, accused of the Sept. 8 shooting death of Vincent Tarver, 22, at Compass West Apartments in Austintown. Tarver’s girlfriend, Joleene Christy, 21, also was wounded in the shooting.

Records show that Richmond’s case was bound over from Mahoning County Juvenile Court to Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on Monday. On Wednesday, the court set Richmond’s bond at $500,000, 10% cash or surety.

Talim Dawud Malik Mumin, 22, of Austintown, also was indicted Thursday on new charges. Those include two counts each of murder and felonious assault, each count with a three-year firearm specification attached. A Mahoning County jail official said Talim was released to another corrections agency April 19, but The Vindicator could not determine his whereabouts Thursday.

Mumin and his younger brother, Tylan Damont Mumin, 18, were indicted in mid-October on charges of tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice, both third-degree felonies. Talim also was indicted on a charge of aggravated rioting, a fifth-degree felony.

Tylan bonded out of Mahoning County jail on Oct. 24. On March 22, he accepted a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to two felony counts of obstructing justice and the court dropped the tampering with evidence charge. Judge Anthony Donofrio sentenced him to two years of probation.

Austintown police said the brothers were accused of moving and attempting to hide the murder weapon from Tarver’s murder, which police later found in an Austintown home. In addition to the Mumin brothers and Richmond, prosecutors said a juvenile female also was charged with evidence tampering.

Authorities said they cannot comment on the new charges in the case because of a court-imposed gag order.

At the time of the incident, police said the shooting resulted from an alcohol-fueled argument.

Christy was with friends at the apartment complex Sept. 8, when she called Tarver to come to her aid after an argument. When Tarver arrived, he got into a fight with members of the group and Richmond allegedly shot him and Christy during the scuffle.

The police report from the incident states that witnesses saw three males arguing with Tarver before shots were fired. The three were then seen fleeing toward Westgate Boulevard.

After speaking to witnesses, police arrested Richmond on Sept. 9. Talim Mumin was arrested on Sept. 13 and his brother in late October.
