TAG displays annual juried show

Trumbull Art Gallery’s annual juried photography show opens Saturday.

“Photo 2020” was open to original images in all photographic mediums and formats by artists of all ages.

Juror Dr. W. Gordon selected 103 photographs from 56 artists out of of the 141 pieces entered by 59 artists. Another 31 images by 27 artists will be displayed in the Nissen Gallery at Trumbull Regional Medical Center.

Six pieces were selected for cash awards, and the winners will be announced at 6:45 p.m. Saturday during the opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

Gordon, a retired dentist and photographer whose work has been shown at the Butler Institute of American Art and the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, said, “When it’s such a general judgment call, you have to evaluate in terms of the use of color, for the ones that are in color, and also the general feeling of the emotion it develops in you by just looking at the image, the composition of the subject.”

Most of the photographs submitted are digital images and are printed in a wide range of sizes.

“It seemed to me to be a worthwhile show, and it has a lot of variation,” Gordon said.

Also being displayed at TAG during the run of the show are some of Gordon’s work from his “Photographs of the Street” series. All are black-and-white prints shot on film.

“I’m not a scenic photographer,” Gordon said. “The grandfather on a bench, the derelict on the street corner, that kind of thing is the area I work in.”
