Crash in Liberty kills man; driver faces charge

LIBERTY — The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Warren Post is investigating a one-vehicle traffic crash that resulted in one fatality, and the 25-year-old driver is facing an aggravated vehicular homicide charge.

The patrol responded just after midnight Friday to the crash on Colonial Drive near Biscayne Avenue. The driver of a red Pontiac driven by Dylan Vrancich of Hubbard was westbound on Colonial when he failed to negotiate a left curve, veered off the right side of the road, reentered the road, lost control and struck a utility pole on the left side of the street, a report from the patrol states.

Troopers said the vehicle then caught fire. Nicholas Thompson, 41, a front-seat passenger from Youngstown, died from his injuries at the crash site, the release states.

Vrancich was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment for nonlife- threatening injuries.

Investigators say both occupants had been wearing a seat belt when the vehicle crashed.

A preliminary investigation found that unsafe speed and alcohol consumption by Vrancich contributed to the crash.

The patrol said Vrancich has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. He has not yet been booked into the Trumbull County jail.

The crash remains under investigation.
