Undead consume Youngstown

13th Zombie Crawl raises money for animal charities

YOUNGSTOWN — If you have a taste for rotting flesh, or just some good old Halloween fun, the annual Youngstown Zombie Crawl is back for (un)lucky year No. 13 this Saturday at the B&O Station Banquet Hall, 530 Mahoning Ave.

The Zombie-themed fundraiser bar crawl will have local professional makeup artists on hand to transform participants into zombies — from fake blood to flesh wounds and broken bones. The artists’ fees for faces usually start around $10 for basic makeup, according to Sandi Cassile with the Youngstown B&O station.

“They can make you look however you request. I’ve looked like Freddie Kreuger before,” Cassile said. “The idea is to be a zombie, you know, but they like to be creative.”

Registration for the crawl begins at noon and is $10. T-shirts designed by Rust Belt Print Shop will be included for the first 100 participants.

The proceeds from this year’s event will go to Buster’s Birgade, a nonprofit that provides financial and material assistance for the basic and emergency needs of dogs and cats in Mahoning County and surrounding areas.

The Youngstown Zombie Crawl will host its first pet costume contest during their family and pet friendly activities from 1 to 6 p.m. There will also be a kid’s costume contest, pumpkin painting, and caramel apple dipping.

“If we have enough apples left over, we plan on doing some kind of bobbing for apples for the dogs,” Cassile said, adding that because of the pandemic they can’t have people bob for apples.

A “Thrill the World” zombie dance will take place at 6 p.m. sharp at the B&O Station, with a registration fee of $5.

The bar crawl starts at 7 p.m. Zombie dancers will cross the Spring Common bridge to downtown with crawlers, and will have a few “thrilling” flashmobs at participating bars on the crawl, according to the dance’s Facebook event.

More than 15 establishments participating in the crawl will have exclusive food and drink specials for zombies.

Cassile said B&O Station plans to have hot apple cider and “apple knockers,” or spiked cider, and there will be “skaryaoke” later in the night.

There will be transportation available on a 20-minute loop around participating locations available for zombie crawlers.
