MVHS adapts history race event

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society has adapted its “Amazing History Race: Mahoning Valley” for the coronavirus era.

The scavenger hunt / road race, now in its sixth year, will take place with a combination of vehicle participation and texted clues to add precautions for public health.

In past years, this event kicked off the History To Go event series in June. After monitoring public social distancing guidelines for outdoor events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MVHS chose to move it to the later part of summer with hope that more people would feel comfortable with participating.

The event runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 22. Those taking part in this year’s race will stay within the safety of their cars as they start and finish at Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., Youngstown.

After all the historic sites are correctly submitted to our History To Go Team, participants will return to the Tyler finish line, the winner will be revealed, and all will be invited to tailgate, enjoying their own food and drink. MVHS encourages teams to create a distinctive name for each vehicle entry and share on social media with #amazinghistoryrace2020.

Reservations must be made by calling Linda Kostka at 330-743-2589, Ext. 125, or by emailing her at lkostka@mahoninghis tory.org.

Due to the necessary modifications made to this year’s schedule, MVHS will not charge any event fees. However, MVHS would appreciate any online donations of $5 or more by clicking on the “Support This Event” button for Amazing History Race on its History To Go web page — mahoninghistory.org/history-to-go/.
