Rebecca Nieminen’s friends ask her, “Do you ever sleep?”

The Kinsman photographer is more than willing to sacrifice a few extra hours of rest for the perfect photograph. And when some of the most dramatic images are available at sunrise and during extreme weather events, that means getting up in the middle of the night and driving up to Lake Erie through a rain or snow storm to capture those waves at their most fierce and most perfectly lit.

Nieminen’s landscape and nature photography will be featured in an exhibition that runs Saturday through July 31 at Artisans’ Corner Gallery in Newbury.

With her business, Storyteller Photography: Images by Rebecca, Nieminen primarily does portrait and wedding photography.

“But I’ve always loved art and nature,” she said. “I’ve always had an affinity for the natural world.”

Nieminen doesn’t rely solely on nature for her final print. Many of the images are manipulated using Adobe Photoshop to amplify color and add to the drama in a way that gives them a painterly quality.

Her interest in photography started in high school and she briefly considered going to art school before studying journalism and photography at Youngstown State University. She worked as a reporter for the Youngstown Vindicator and, after getting her master’s degree in English at YSU, as an adjunct professor at her alma mater.

She started Storyteller Photography in 2013 as a way to support her family post-divorce while having a schedule flexible enough to still care for her two children.

Even though she’s best known now as a photographer, she still considers herself a writer first. She often tells the stories behind the photos — getting her boots stuck in mud while wading to desired shooting spot, having police cars stop and ask her what she’s doing along the side of the road — on the blog at her website, storytellerphotographyimagesbyrebecca.com.

And the photos themselves have tales to tell.

“I would say that a lot of the images tell stories, so to speak,” Nieminen said. “When people look at them, they’re inspired to wonder what the story is behind the image.”

The work featured at Artisans’ Corner Gallery includes many images shot in or near Trumbull County, a mix of popular sellers locally and some of her latest work.

“All of my spring weddings were canceled or rescheduled,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of time to shoot landscapes. There’s a lot of new material to work with.”
