Like most people, the members of the Stambaugh Chorus are limiting travel and sheltering in place due to COVID-19.

Unlike most people, they were supposed to perform at Carnegie Hall this month.

Chorus conductor Hae-Jong Lee was scheduled to conduct a performance of John Rutter’s “Requiem” at the renowned New York City concert venue on May 23. It would feature the New England Symphonic Ensemble, world-class soloists and a large chorus that would have included members of the Stambaugh Chorus as well as the Youngstown Cantorum, made up primarily of students from Youngstown State University and its Dana School of Music.

Chorus President Jeff Ward said they just found out the concert will be rescheduled in May 2021.

“That was kind of a relief,” Ward said. “The members had paid (travel, hotel and other expenses) out of their own pockets … We were devastated that it was canceled (initially) with no refund, but we’ve been working with them and got it rescheduled.”

With the chorus also unable to perform locally, it will present a reprise of its 2016 concert online at 7 p.m. Friday.

The concert, “Giving Voice to Peace II,” featured Gabriel Faure’s “Requiem,” and the chorus was joined by the Stambaugh Festival Orchestra, Ashtabula Choral Society, Austintown Fitch High School Concert Choir, Maestro Arts Youth Concert Choir, Mahoning Valley Chorale, Wilmington Chamber Singers, Warren Civic Chorus Children’s Choir, soloists Brianne K. Sampson and Brian Johnson and master of ceremonies Gary Sexton.

The concert was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Barbara Modic, past president of the chorus. Only an audio recording of the concert exists, and it will be accompanied by photographs taken before, during and after the performance.

The concert will be streamed on the Stambaugh Chorus Facebook page, and a link will be posted on its website, stambaughchorus.org.

Ward said the chorus has recordings of other concerts that it hopes to post throughout the summer.
