Make changes to ensure inclusion

DEAR EDITOR:

During this time when we celebrate the Fourth of July, I believe it is time for true inclusion of all citizens. Recent events have demonstrated this isn’t always true.

We can’t be held responsible for our forefathers’ errors. We shouldn’t forget them, but neither do they have to be memorialized. Potentially offensive monuments should be moved or presented in historical settings.

I also think it’s time to update our holidays. July Fourth may be our country’s Independence Day, but not for all. I propose naming Juneteenth a new national holiday celebrating the independence of our black citizens. I also would suggest it is time to drop Columbus Day from our national holidays. States could individually make it a state holiday.

Acknowledging our past, honoring our heroes and recognizing shortcomings will help unify all of us.

Please have a safe and respectful holiday. Celebrate responsibly, and please practice social distancing and, when appropriate, wear your mask.
