East Side playground scene of homicide

26-year-old man found stabbed, lying in grass

YOUNGSTOWN — The city’s latest homicide victim was a man, 26, found lying in the grass near the playground between apartment buildings in the 1500 block of Hickory Court, east of Albert Street on the East Side at 1:14 a.m. Saturday.

According to a newly released Youngstown police report, the man was lying on his back and had stab wounds. He was not able to talk “to give any explanation to officers” and was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, the report states.

A person at the scene told police that the power had gone out, and he or she came outside to see if anyone else’s power had gone. That is when the person saw the man on the ground and gave assistance to him until officers arrived.

Another person told police he or she was standing in the area when he or she “saw several people fighting. And then the next thing he knew, a male was on the ground.”

Additional police officers arrived to help secure the scene, then detectives and a supervisor arrived, the report states.

LAST HOMICIDE

The last homicide took place the evening of March 20 on Millet Avenue on the West Side. A boy, 17, was killed and a man, 18, was shot but survived.

According to a Yougnstown police report, officers found the 17-year-old deceased inside of a black car that was parked on the street. Officers also found the survivor nearby.

Officers found bullet shell casings inside and outside the vehicle, according to the police report.
