The Chill Can buildings are sitting vacant. The city wants some return on its investment in the abandoned project. The Ward Bakery artists need a place. Could it be a win for both?

News tonight showed employees at Mercy Health outpatient surgery complaining about a bad employer that blindsided them. A five-week notice is not blindsided. I say that being 69 and having seen true blindsided shutdowns.

In regards to the person who is missing his / her Sunday Trib with a cup of coffee in hand and nothing to read. This Sunday, I just finished my second cup of coffee while reading the Sunday part of the weekend Trib. The weekend edition is larger to be read all at once or divided for two days. Take your pick then move on to your day.

A Sunday newspaper halt in the Mahoning Valley. No Tribune, no Vindicator, means no Cleveland Plain Dealer. I can live without the two local papers on Sunday, but I like that edition of the Cleveland paper, especially the Sports and Forum sections. Wow! Things must be really tight when you can’t drop off some Plain Dealers at the stores and gas stations. Always trying to save a buck in the end costing the consumer.

So many of our American servicemen and servicewomen have made the supreme sacrifice to protect the freedoms and rights we enjoy every day. Are we actually willing to turn our backs on them and relinquish our cherished democracy to a man who has already proven himself unfit for the extraordinarily consequential responsibilities of the Presidency? A vengeful, despicable, self-proclaimed dictator who selfishly wants our great nation for nothing more than his personal plaything?

We all know what happened to the Francis Scott Key Bridge. In Florida, a similar collision in 1980 killed 35 people. Bridges built after 1991 were required to have increased protection.

The Baltimore port is the busiest port on the East Coast. The state of Maryland is responsible for the Keys Bridge. The standards were changed 33 years ago, what was the state of Maryland waiting for, the US government to pay for the upgrade? Oh wait, that’s what happened.

The following book is very interesting and informative: House of Trump, House of Putin by Craig Unger. Book is published by Dutton (Penguin Random House).

Why do we ship oil, munitions and weapons to Ukraine, Gaza Strip and Taiwan when there are natural disaster victims throughout the South and East, including East Palestine victims, desperately needing assistance? Secondly, how is it that the illegal border entrants appear showered, shaved and well-fed, yet needy for our welfare and medical care which our citizens do not receive? Don’t forget we can’t replenish our diminished reserves because Mr. Biden said “oil reserves and goods are too expensive.”

• Canfield.

In Palestine, the people voted for Hamas to govern them. It has been the governing body of the Gaza Strip since 2007 and 90% of Palestinians support Hamas. This age-old struggle is over religion and military power. It’s that simple. No matter what Joe Biden says or thinks, Israel has every right to defend itself and deserves our support. Unless Hamas releases the kidnapped people, this war will only continue to get worse, not only there but here.

How can “new vegetation” grow in Mill Creek Park with all the fallen dead trees? They are left to rot. Nothing will grow under dead wood. Just drive through the park and observe. I’ve lived by the park for 18 years and have yet to see them remove a fallen tree. First, the geese, then the deer … are the walkers next??

There is no comparison between dollar stores in the suburbs to ones in city, as the suburbs have other stores to choose from. They have to put produce in to draw people from other stores. We don’t have that option in Youngstown. Beggars can’t be choosers. We need what we have. Don’t take our only option off the table. Council is punishing our community by limiting stores from coming here. Now we’ll be unfed, unclean and uninspired to look up.

FYI. Do you know that hydrilla powder supplement is loaded with calcium and antioxidants? Noted to aid in weight loss and increase energy supporting healthy bones skin hair and nails. Hydrilla also is used as a biofertilizer in agricultural farming. Eradicating hydrilla from Mosquito Lake may be a good use of taxpayer monies but it goes to prove that everything in God’s creation has a purpose.

I just saw in the Business Journal that Trumbull and Mahoning County commissioners just won the Chamber’s Spirit of the Valley Award. Now I know what $1,000,000 will get you. Great investment…not. Waste of taxpayer money.

Someone should be embarrassed to sign their name to selfish and ignorant thoughts as the letter writer who doesn’t want his tax money to go toward repairing the Key Bridge in Baltimore. I assume conservative media did not tell the author that over 50,000 jobs, $16 billion in personal income and, most importantly to a conservative I’m sure, $63 billion in business revenue are affected by the bridge being knocked out. So sad to see conservatives be this selfish.

Between 1941 and 1945 we lost hundreds of thousands of our “boys” and women fighting the Japanese after their surprise attack of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. The crew of the USS Arizona still lies in their underwater grave. What would they be thinking today, if they were alive? US Steel shareholders recently sold the company to Nippon Steel of Japan! I’m sure those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, would be saying, “This is such an unpatriotic move!”

Trump, take your knife out of the back of Ukraine. If “Mad Vlad” Putin’s tanks roll into Kiev, it will be solely your fault. If Zelensky suffers the same fate as Navalny, his blood will be on your hands. To those who support this betrayal, I say: If you’re so pro-Putin, why don’t you move to Russia? (I’m sure you’ll love living there.) Remember: Those who try to trade freedom for safety end up with neither.

The Democrats and President Biden have made expanding abortion the main focus of their presidential campaign. What about the issues of illegal immigration and the open border, high prices and inflation, energy, the national debt, current wars, etc.? These are issues that affect everyone. If the Democrats are basing their campaign on the aborting of unborn babies, how does this make us a better country? May God help them and all of us if they succeed.

Exactly how much land taxes does Youngstown receive from all these dollar stores and how much job taxes are coming into the city because of these stores? What will fill that vacuum if council takes away the ability for dollar stores to build here? Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

I was disappointed when I first heard that there would only be one newspaper to cover Saturday and Sunday. Now that the first edition has arrived at my front door I am very pleased with this decision. I will miss not reading the Sunday newspaper before church, but I like how well the weekend edition turned out. I am also happy that our guy who gets the paper right to our front door every day finally gets a little break.

• Boardman

I feel you are doing a disservice by not publishing a paper on Sunday. I rely on the Trib for news and now I get none on Sunday. A larger Saturday paper does not do the job. I am sure you’re enjoying the savings. Thanks for throwing us under the bus. Please don’t try to convince anyone it’s good for anyone but you.

What a shame two local eateries are closing and one had been in business for over 30 years! Add two Save-A-Lots too! No surprise as Biden’s policies will contribute to more small business closings and higher prices. And never forget: Sherrod Brown has supported the Biden agenda full throttle!

I have seen a picture that showed Bill Johnson, YSU president and former member of Congress posing and announcing a $250,000 investment in local law enforcement even though he and 211 of his former colleagues voted against the money. Also in the picture is Sheriff Jerry Greene who switched to the Republican Party who voted against it! Like so many issues such as Social Security, Medicare and many more over the years, thank you Democratic Party.

I have been in the Insurance profession for 40+ years and I’m not surprised Trumbull County’s Liability Insurance has increased to $825,384. I am surprised that Trumbull County did not receive a cancellation notice from CORSA. An old Insurance Broker told me — we do not insure sticks of dynamite. The county, in my professional opinion, is a very big stick of dynamite.

“Transgender Day of Visibility” has been celebrated on March 31 since 2009. On March 31, 2021 President Biden proclaimed March 31 as the official day of transgender visibility. Every year the date for Easter varies. This year Easter happened to occur on March 31. Biden did not declare Easter as Transgender Day, or that there was any other connection. The two events just happened to occur on the same day.

In this country, we have an illegal immigration problem and a homeless problem. Since Democrats believe in open borders, there is a solution to these problems, when you vote Democrat you get to take home 10 Newcomers and if you are a Democrat Politician you get to welcome 20 newcomers into your home. Problems solved.
