Color me safe on the roadways
DEAR EDITOR:
A few letters back, I discussed how, with the increase in driving during these Ohio summer days, drivers need to refresh themselves on the roadway laws. I’d like to continue that refresher training concept and share the following:
Did you ever wonder why all those roadway signs are different colors? Red, blue, green, white, brown, and yellow!
It’s not just to make the roadway a little more appealing or that’s the paint we had; there is a reason behind the sign color.
Red: Regulatory. When you see a red sign, this means you are going to or must do something, e.g., Stop, Wrong Way, Do Not Enter.
White: Regulatory. Sharing the “must do” regulation with red, white signs often depicts the speed limit.
Yellow: Warning / Advisory. Be prepared to act or pay attention; these signs are warning you of a roadway condition.
Fluorescent Yellow: Emphasized Warning. Somewhat new to the sign coloring, similar to yellow, but with a stronger, “hey, pay attention,” e.g., school crossing.
Brown: Areas of Interest. These signs identify areas of interest ahead, cultural, historical, camping, etc.
Now, for the most useful, “didn’t you see that,” color signs during any family vacation road trip.
Green: Directional. These tell you what route you are on, what exits are coming up and miles you have to travel to get where you are going; they usually follow up with, “should have taken that exit.”
Blue: Services. This one is the most used sign during any roadway trip, the one you have to look for when, “hey, we really have to stop at the next rest area.”
Enjoy the summer road trips, stay safe and stay informed.
