Youngstown man charged with assaulting pregnant girlfriend

LIBERTY — A Youngstown man accused of choking his pregnant girlfriend made an appearance in court on several charges.

Cameron Atwood, 23, made an initial appearance on charges of strangulation, unlawful restraint and domestic violence in front of Girard Municipal Court Judge Jeffery Adler Wednesday morning.

According to a police report, Liberty officers were called to the Super 8 Motel Tuesday for a domestic assault in progress. Police arrived to find a woman crying with red marks on her arms, neck and lip areas.

A man, later identified as Atwood, was standing in the room and was immediately detained and escorted to a cruiser to make the scene safe and tend to the woman.

The woman, visibly pregnant and breathing heavily, said she and Atwood had been in an on-and-off relationship, noting that he would get violent sometimes and similar things have happened in the past, according to the report.

The woman told officers that they had just made it to the motel less than an hour before police were called by both her and nearby tenants. The report states Atwood became upset with the woman and would not leave the room, pushing, shoving and grabbing her.

The report states the woman began to fear for her and her unborn child’s safety, so she started to climb out the window above the bed, but Atwood then grabbed her and forcefully threw her on the bed to prevent her from leaving.

Atwood then got on top of the woman and began choking her. She told officers that while she did not fully lose consciousness, the pressure caused her to not breathe and it was painful, according to the report. The woman was able to get away at some point and call police in the motel’s outside parking lot.

The woman said her right breast area hurt, adding that Atwood had squeezed her to the point where breast milk began to come out, according to the report, and a search for injuries showed a red mark in that area.

The officer noted red bruising and scratch marks consistent with grappling a person on their arms, as well as handprints.

The woman was apprehensive about filing charges on her own, so the officer told her he would be filing charges against Atwood.

The report states the woman was assessed by Liberty Fire Department medics, who determined a hospital trip was needed.

The report states Atwood was uncooperative with officers’ orders and would not get in the cruiser when asked to do so, and he became combative with corrections officers and had to be subdued and restrained in a holding area for safety upon being taken to the Trumbull County jail.

Court records do not show Atwood’s next court date, but he remained in jail as of Wednesday night.
