Front Street reopens
Work started December 2021
Front Street, which received a major makeover over the past 13 months, reopened to two-way traffic Tuesday for the first time since December 2021.
The remodel took away two lanes of roadway and created wide sidewalks, new lighting and a tree lawn.
Pedestrians walking to their cars late Tuesday remarked that it would take a minute to remember how to walk and drive on Front Street after so many months of having only one-way traffic.
The road remained open in one direction during the construction.
Improvements were made to Front Street from Vindicator Square to South Avenue, passing by three courthouses at the Market Street intersection and the Covelli Centre.
Front is one of several downtown streets being remodeled in a $27.65 million project called SMART2 (Strategic and Sustainable, Medical and Manufacturing, Academic and Arts, Residential and Recreation and Technology and Training) that began in 2020 with improvements to Fifth Avenue. Other streets involved are Phelps and Commerce. After that will be Federal Street and Rayen Avenue.
