Austintown man gets 5 to 7 years in prison for September robbery, assaults

YOUNGSTOWN — A man from Austintown has been sentenced to five to seven years in prison on aggravated robbery, felonious assault and abduction charges.

Joseph A. Hoffman, 19, of North Roanoke Avenue, was indicted in September on nine charges — aggravated robbery with a firearm specification, kidnapping, abduction, obstructing official business, aggravated menacing and two counts each of domestic violence and felonious assault.

The offenses took place during a Sept. 8 domestic incident at his home that involved multiple victims, a gun, hammer and a knife, according to Mahoning County prosecutors.

Hoffman was sentenced Wednesday by Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge John Durkin. The sentence was jointly recommended by prosecutors and the defense.

According to an Austintown police report, police were called just before 10 p.m. to the home by a woman who said Hoffman had fired a gun and went into the house, where several people were inside.

Police, when they arrived, escorted multiple people away from the house, in which Hoffman had locked himself with two women, the report states.

Officers set up a perimeter around the home and asked Hoffman by loud speaker to come out with his hands up, the report states.

An officer was able to use a fire department ladder to get a better look into a bedroom where the women were believed to be located. The officer was able to see the women, who acknowledged the officer by pointing toward a door inside the bedroom.

The officer went down the ladder and heard a man say he was sorry, and then the officer heard screaming. He advised other officers to get inside the home, which they did by kicking in the front door.

The women were able to get out of the home, and they were escorted to safety by police.

Hoffman came to the front door and sat down in the living room, but refused to come out, the report states.

He was taken into custody and was taken to the Mahoning County jail, the report states.

Caitlyn Andrews, assistant county prosecutor, said the incident involved four victims, two of whom were injured with a hammer and a knife.

At the time of the incident, Austintown police said in a news release they responded to a domestic situation in which two people were injured and a firearm was discharged. No one was hit by the gunfire, and both injured parties were treated at the scene.

Hoffman was 18 at the time of the incident and has been in the Mahoning County jail since Sept. 9, according to jail records.

Statements were gathered from the victims, one of which stated Hoffman asked her for his Social Security card from a safe for a job interview. When she opened the safe, Hoffman demanded to have the gun in the safe.

When she turned around, Hoffman held a hammer over her head and struck her in the head with it and took two guns from the safe. He also took her cellphone, saying he did so to stop her from calling the police. He said he was going to kill her.

He then locked the woman and another person out of the house and returned a short time later holding a bag, car keys and a gun and was trying to take the car, the report states. The woman said she slammed the open car door into Hoffman’s body, causing the gun to fire.

The woman said she tried to take the gun from Hoffman, and he fired it “right by her head,” the report states. Hoffman then went into the house and locked the door.

A man said he woke up to Hoffman standing over him with a hammer. They fought over the hammer, causing the victim to be hit in the head with it, the report states. The man said he and Hoffman went outside, where they struggled over a gun, and it went off near the car. Hoffman ran back inside the house.

Hoffman also entered an upstairs bedroom and reached into it with a knife to get in, but a person in the bedroom took the knife and threw it out the window, the report states. Hoffman came into the room and apologized, and the two people in the room were able to run out of the bedroom and leave the house, the report states.

The person taking the knife was cut in the hand.

A knife was found in the backyard, as well as two guns from the front porch, the report states. A spent shell casing was found near a vehicle outside.
