Sousa marches are soundtrack for Packard concert

The W.D. Packard Concert Band is taking its “March” concert literally.

Sunday’s performance will focus on the marches composed by John Philip Sousa, and each song will be directed by a Packard Band member who is a retired band director / music educator.

Sousa (1854-1932) has been called “the March King.” The son of immigrants grew up in Washington, D.C., and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1868 as an apprentice in the Marine Band. During his career, Sousa composed 136 military marches, including “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and “Semper Fidelis,” which became the official march of the Marines.

The only non-Sousa works will be “The Star-Spangled Banner” to open the concert and “Fanfare for March Mania,” written by Jerry Ascione (a commissioned composer and past guest conductor with the Packard Band.

The Sousa marches and guest conductors featured will include:

• “Mother Hubbard March” — Cosenza

• “Review March” — James Scanga, Farrell Senior High School

• “Across the Danube March” — Ken Alexander, Austintown Local Schools

• “The Picador March” — Thomas Brucoli, Champion Local Schools

• “The Belle of Chicago March” — Richard Bartunek, Warren City Schools

• “Jack Tar March” — William Forrester, Hubbard Senior High School

• “America First March” — Richard Rollo, Warren G. Harding High School

• “The Dauntless Battalion March” — Daniel Carioti, Warren City Schools

• “Prince Charming March” — Rebecca Bickel, Maplewood Local Schools

• “La Flor de Seville March” — David Colella, Carrollton Exempted Village Schools

• “A Century of Progress March” — Albert Colella, Poland Seminary High School

• “The Circumnavigators Club March” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever March” — Robert Barnett, West Branch Local Schools

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Sunday at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. Admission is free, and funding is provided by the W.D. Packard trust.
