Opera couple sings with Packard band

Two guest vocalists will join the W.D. Packard Concert Band for its next outdoor concert.

Soprano Sujin Lee and tenor Shawn Mathey, who are married, each will perform solo and do a duet together as part of the program.

Lee has toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States, performing with Teatro Lyrico d’Europa, Toledo Opera, Delaware Opera, Dicapo Opera and multiple appearances with Ocean City Pops.

She received her master of music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and an artist diploma from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. Lee currently is an adjunct associate professor of voice and opera at Bowling Green State University.

Mathey has sung leading roles in 35 operas and has performed with San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, the Dallas Opera, Rome Opera, Paris Opera, Zürich Opera, the Salzburg Festival, Opera Hong Kong and the Frankfurt Opera.

Mathey received his master of music degree from Bowling Green State University and his artist diploma from Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

Lee will sing Giacomo Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro” and Lerner & Loewe’s “I Could Have Dance All Night.” Mathey will sing the Irish standard “Danny Boy” and Di Capua-Capurro’s “O Sole Mio.” Together they do “Because.”

Guest conductor will be Bruce Moss, who retired in 2024 after 30 years as director of band activities at Bowling Green State University. He is in his 47th season as conductor and artistic director of the Wheaton (Illinois) Municipal Band, which was featured in the PBS “American Experience” documentary “If You Knew Sousa.”

Other selections on the program include Ronald S. Seitz’s “Grandioso” march, Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust” (featuring Lou Pisani on trumpet), Robert Russell Bennett’s “Western One-Step,” Jerry H. Bilik’s “American Civil War Fantasy” and a medley of Glenn Miller favorites.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. Sunday at the south lawn banshell at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. Admission is free, and funding is provided by the W.D. Packard trust.
