Bernard asks DeWine for $5M for Trumbull County 911 Center

WARREN — Trumbull County Commission President Tony Bernard is seeking approximately $5 million worth of help from state officials for a building and equipping of a new Trumbull County 911 Center.

When Gov. Mike DeWine and others were in Trumbull County for the Momentum on the Mahoning event last week, Bernard said he took a few moments with the governor to remind him of the statements made two years ago about bringing money back to the county for 911.

The commissioner, prior to Wednesday’s commissioner’s meeting at the Trumbull County Fair, said he told the governor that Trumbull needs about $1.5 million for the 911’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and $3.5 million for the building of a new facility.

After personally talking to DeWine about the county’s needs for its 911 Center, Bernard sent a letter to DeWine’s office two days later asking for financial assistance. Bernard also contacted the office of state Rep. Nick Santucci, R-Niles, for additional assistance.

“The current CAD system that is utilized is outdated and in need of upgrading to ensure the first responders are able to receive timely dispatch for the health and safety of Trumbull County residents,” Bernard wrote in the letter. “It is imperative that any new system installed includes interfacing integration with other existing systems currently used by our first responders throughout the county.”

In addition to seeking funds for a new CAD system, Bernard outlined the county’s effort to relocate its 911 Center.

Estimates place the cost of its relocation to approximately $3.5 million.

Although there have been numerous locations discussed for the 911 Center, Bernard suggested there are two sites receiving the most attention — the second floor of the Trumbull County Combined Health District in Cortland or inside a facility at the Kent State University at Trumbull campus in Champion.

“I’m waiting to hear back from the governor’s office,” Bernard said. “My whole goal is to get a new 911 facility and get a new CAD system without borrowing money or without going to the taxpayers.

“We probably won’t get the entire $5 million, but maybe we will get something,” he added.

Starting at $3.85/week.
