Cross country: Area runners advance to regional

PLAIN TOWNSHIP — Poland’s girls cross country team took second to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 35-77 at the Division II district cross country meet at GlenOak High School.

The Bulldogs were led by Halle Sebest’s fourth-place finish.

Salem’s Carly Hall took third as the Quakers took third (116).

The top seven teams and top 28 runners in Division II advance to next week’s regional at Boardman.

Poland’s Logan Flament took second in the D-II boys race, while Salem (157) and West Branch (180) took sixth and seventh, respectively.

DIVISION I: Boardman’s girls took sixth with 146, while Canfield was ninth with 243.

The top nine teams and 36 runners advanced.

Boardman’s Raegan Burkey was seventh (19:09.34), while teammate Julia Gorby was 18th (19:55.94).

Canfield’s Delaney O’Brien was 26th (20:17.76), while Boardman’s Alayna Cuevas was 32nd (20:27.06) and Canfield’s Aurora Fares was 33rd (20:27.86).

Boardman’s Frank Bero led the Division I boys runners with a ninth-place finish (16:17.97). The top eight teams and 32 runners advance.

Canfield’s Nick Plant took 16th (16:33.94), while Boardman’s Beau Gorby was 28th (16:51.63).

DIVISION III: South Range’s Spencer Bush finished second to lead the Raiders’ boys to a third-place finish (79) in the D-III boys race as they advance to next week’s regionals at Boardman.

South Range’s girls (85) took third in the D-III girls race, along with Lowellville’s Sophia Yan placing third. Abilgail Baun and Emily Razo both placed in the top five for the Raiders.

East Palestine was fourth with 109.

The top five teams and top 20 runners advanced.

In the district meet at Madison, McDonald senior Brody Rupe won the district title in a time of 16:29.70.

Maplewood’s boys edged out McDonald for the D-III boys title, 42-54. Mineral Ridge finished fourth.

The top four teams and top 16 runners advance to next weekend’s regional meet in Boardman.

Mineral Ridge’s Timmy Pappagallo finished in the top five.

Mineral Ridge’s girls (57) and McDonald girls (107) took third and fourth, respectively. Mineral Ridge’s Sylvia Traw placed fifth.

The top five D-III girls teams and top 20 runners advance to regionals.
