Chaney tops Mooney; Raiders, Campbell win

¯ CHANEY 67, CARDINAL MOONEY 58: YOUNGSTOWN — A strong third quarter helped Chaney inch its way past the Cardinals in a crosstown rivalry.

Chaney had four players score in double figures, led by William Browns’ 20 points. Quincy Jones (16), Sherrod Taylor (12) and Travis Easterly (12) all played key roles as well. The Cowboys (5-2) led 31-28 at halftime and then outscored Mooney, 18-12, in the third quarter.

Mike Pelini scored a game-high 22 points for Mooney (2-4). Deon Jenkins added 13.

¯ SOUTH RANGE 53, SPRINGFIELD 51: NEW MIDDLETOWN — South Range held off the host Tigers in a nip-and-tuck affair throughout.

The Raiders outscored Springfield 11-7 in the fourth quarter after trailing 44-42 through three periods. South Range led 12-10 and 27-25 at the first two quarter stoppages.

Jake Gehring and Kris Scandy scored 11 points apiece for South Range, which moved to 4-2. Chris Brooks and Eli Taylor each added seven points as seven Raiders scored.

Springfield got 17 points apiece from Drew Clark and Beau Brungard, but no other Tigers scored more than six points.Springfield fell to 2-3.

¯ CAMPBELL 73, MATHEWS 66: CAMPBELL — Kevin Moore’s big fourth quarter lifted the Red Devils to a non-conference victory over Mathews.

The game was tied at 51 entering the fourth, but Moore scored 16 of his game-high 27 points to help Campbell pull away. The Red Devils outscored Mathews, 22-15, in the fourth. Kayvone Moore chipped in 11 for Campbell.

¯ HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN 62, CRESTVIEW 56: COLUMBANA — Host Crestview was upended by Heartland Christian in its Holiday Classic, as the Lions outscored the Red Devils 36-18 from 3-point land.

Steven Baker made seven shots from distance and scored 19 points for the Lions, who also got 18 points from Joey Donorio, 11 from Becket Richards and nine from Cade Rother.

Crestview, which fell to 2-5 and will play Western Reserve in the consolation today, was led by Drake Golden with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Anthony Cusick added 11 points and Tony Perorazio had 10 rebounds.

¯ EAST CANTON 52, WESTERN RESERVE 46: COLUMBIANA — The Blue Devils fell behind 13-3 in a cold-shooting first quarter, but made four 3-pointers in the second period en route t a 23-22 lead during the Crestview Holiday Classic. However, they couldn’t stay hot from deep and had trouble scoring inside against East Canton, which also made 11 of 15 free throws.

Ryan Gordon made five 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 17 points for the Blue Devils and Todd Henning made three long-distance shots and finished with 15 points.

¯ LOWELLVILLE 64, SOUTHEAST 59: LORDSTOWN — The Rockets put up a strong fourth quarter to come out on top in a matchup against Southeast in the Lordstown Holiday Tournament.

Lowellville outscored the Pirates 21-12 in the fourth quarter to get the advantage in a back-and-forth game.

Anthony Lucente led the team with 31 points, Cole Bunofsky and Vinny Ballone each added 12.

The Rockets advance to face Leetonia tonight at 5:30.

¯ BROOKFIELD 57, JACKSON-MILTON 52: NORTH JACKSON — A second-half surge vaulted Brookfield over the Blue Jays in the opening round of the Jackson-Milton Holiday Tournament.

The Warriors trailed, 27-22, at halftime, but they outscored Jackson-Milton, 35-25, in the final two quarters for the come-from-behind victory. Haden Gibson led all scorers with 24 points. Conner Stevens followed with 15. Gage Emery led in rebounds (10) and assists (5) while chipping in five points.

Mason Robison scored a team-high 23 for the Blue Jays, including five 3-pointers. Frankie Prozy(11) and Cole Grope (10) also reached double figures.

GIRLS

¯ WEST BRANCH 58, SOUTH RANGE 40: BEAVER TOWNSHIP — The Warriors outscored South Range 13-3 in the second quarter to build up a lead that they’d maintain in a win at the South Range Tournament.

Peyton Alazaus led the team with 13 points. Jessica Bock scored 12 points and Hannah Ridgeway scored 10.

West Branch outscored South Range 23-11 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Izzy Lamparty led the Raiders with 12 points and Gabby Lamparty scored 11.

The Warriors move to 7-1 while South Range falls to 7-4.

¯ HOWLAND 68, URSULINE 38: BEAVER TOWNSHIP — Freshman Courtney Clark scored 20 points and Alyssa Pompelia added 14 as Howland improved to 6-3 by rolling past Ursuline in the South Range Holiday Tournament.

Ursuline, which fell to 2-7, was 16-for-45 from the field and 3-for-14 from the free-throw line. he Irish were led by Rachel Fabry’s 10 points. Paris Gilmore added nine points and Alayna Smith grabbed six rebounds.

¯ HUBBARD 41, EAST 35: BROOKFIELD — Hubbard notched its first victory of the season during the Brookfield Holiday Tournament, as Jackie Adler scored 18 points and the Eagles outscored East 14-3 at the free-throw line. Toshe Stone added seven points and four assists and Gianna Micheline had five points and six rebounds for the Eagles, who improved to 1-8.

East got 12 points from Samair Colon and 10 from Brianna Thompson, but the Golden Bears were 3-for-16 from the stripe.

Hubbard will play Brookfield in the championship today and East will play Cleveland John Marshall in the consolation.
