Austintown woman arraigned in death of 17-year-old daughter

AUSTINTOWN — Bond was set at $500,000 when Laronda A. Mitchell, 38, of South Raccoon Road in Austintown was arraigned Wednesday morning in Mahoning County Area Court in Austintown in the death of her 17-year-old daughter.

During the hearing, no plea was accepted on the involuntary manslaughter, felony child endangering, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse.

Not guilty pleas were made on the two misdemeanor counts of child endangering and failure to report a death, and Judge Scott Hunter ordered Mitchell to have no contact with “the alleged victim(s)” of the misdemeanor counts of child endangering during the pendency of the case, according to court documents. Hunter set a 10 a.m. May 27 preliminary hearing on the felonies and a “trial” at that same time and day on the misdemeanor charges.

The Austintown Police Department filed the charges against Mitchell on Monday. The department confirmed the charges related to the finding of the 17-year-old’s body April 26 in Mitchell’s home, where police had gone April 26 to conduct a welfare check and later discovered the body in a “sealed” bedroom.

The room was sealed, Mitchell told police that day, because her daughter had been deceased for at least a month.

Mitchell was taken to the Mahoning County jail on Tuesday. If Mitchell is convicted of involuntary manslaughter, she could get more than 11 years in prison.

The name of the victim has not been provided, and the investigation is ongoing, Austintown police said Tuesday in a news release.

Mitchell’s involuntary manslaughter charge accuses Mitchell of causing the death as a result of her committing the felony child endangering.

The felony child endangering offense alleges that “No person who is the parent, guardian, custodian, person having custody or control … of (name blacked out) under 18 years of age or a child with a mental or physical disability under 21 years of age, shall create a substantial risk to the health or safety of the child by violating duty of care, protection or support.”

The tampering with evidence charge alleges that Mitchell did “tape off the doorway to the victim’s room, cover and seal the windows in the deceased’s bedroom windows to keep anyone from seeing inside, cover the deceased in her bed and remove the deceased’s belongings, clothing and computer.”
