3 YPD officers injured in collision of cruisers
Three Youngstown police officers suffered minor injuries in a Saturday crash involving two Youngstown police cruisers at the intersection of Wick and Rayen avenues, just north of downtown.
A Youngstown police crash report states that the cruiser of Detective Sgt. Bill Burton was traveling north on Wick Avenue crossing over Rayen Avenue, and a cruiser driven by patrol officer Tyler Srbinovich was traveling east on Rayen Avenue, and “both (cruisers) collided in the intersection.”
The crash took place at 9:17 p.m. Patrol officer Dontre Mastronarde was a passenger in Srbinovich’s cruiser.
All three officers were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
City spokesman Andy Resnick stated Tuesday that all three officers were “treated for minor injuries and are OK.”
As for the cause of the crash, “We are still trying to determine the cause, as the investigation is still pending,” Resnick stated.
All three officers were wearing seat belts, the police crash report states. It states that the speed limit at that location is 35 mph. It does not indicate how fast either vehicle was traveling.
No citations are mentioned, and there were no indications of any fault by either driver in the report. The intersection has a traffic light, but the report does not state whether either of the cruisers was driving through a red light.
No alcohol or drug testing was suspected or tested for.
Air bags deployed in both vehicles. The front of Burton’s car sustained “disabling damage,” and the back passenger corner of Srbinovich’s car sustained “disabling damage.”
The diagram with the crash report shows Burton’s cruiser making contact with the rear passenger part of Srbinovich’s cruiser as Srbinovich’s cruiser is nearly through the intersection.
