WRTA’s Warren routes end May 30

WARREN — The two Western Reserve Transit Authority routes in Warren that are ending on May 30 provided approximately 31,534 one-way trips from the middle of March 2024 through March 31 of this year, according to figures provided to Trumbull County commissioners Tuesday.

The 73-West route had the most one-way trips at 17,911, and the 74 Elm Road route had 13,623 trips.

The Warren Express through the first quarter of 2025 notched 45,495 trips. Warren Express is WRTA’s third-most often used bus route.

The total cost of the two routes being eliminated was $449,925 through 2025’s first quarter. Half of that amount was paid for through a state grant. The remaining $224,925 was split between Warren and Trumbull County commissioners, with each paying $112,481.

These funds were used to reestablish WRTA’s 73-West route, which travels West Market Street to Tod Avenue NW to Norwood Street to Northfield Avenue NW to Parkman Road, and its 74-Elm route, which travels High Street to Elm Road NW to the Walmart in Bazetta.

These routes, and two others, were eliminated in August 2023 when the state did not provide the federal dollars that paid for the bus services. The two routes ended because neither Warren nor county officials provided the local matches needed for WRTA Director Dean Harris to apply for a grant to fund the routes.

Trumbull Transit Administrator Mike Salamone said Trumbull Transit will be able to handle the vast majority of passengers who no longer will be able to ride on the WRTA routes.

“We did it before when the routes were eliminated,” Salamone said. “I have had calls from citizens that ride these two routes and have been able to move all but one citizen from WRTA service to Trumbull County service.”

Salamone noted that from January through March, Trumbull Transit had 10,228 one-way trips on its buses, which is an increase in the number of rides provided during the same period in 2024, which was 9,777.

Passengers 65 and younger took 6,714 one-way trips, while seniors over 65 took 487 one-way trips. Disabled residents took 3,027 one-way trips. The majority of the disabled riders taking those trips were 60 and younger.

Trumbull Transit is funded with a $262,862.19 grant and local funding of $86,143.17.

Starting at $3.23/week.
