Youngstown schools’ dean of students arrested

LIBERTY – Chivas Whipple, the Youngstown school district’s dean of students and head boys basketball coach at East High School, is facing a charge of domestic violence after his arrest Saturday morning.

Liberty police Chief Toby Meloro on Saturday confirmed Whipple was charged related to an incident with a family member.

Meloro said more information would be available Monday at the earliest, adding, “There’s a lot to it.”

Whipple, 44, of Liberty, was booked into the Trumbull County jail Saturday and later was released, according to information on the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office

website.

Whipple was placed on paid administrative leave by the school district after his arrest, according to reports. Youngstown City School District spokeswoman Stacy Quinones could not be reached for further comment.

Whipple has been dean of students and East’s basketball coach since 2021.

Whipple, a Youngstown native and Rayen School graduate, previously served as an assistant boys basketball coach at Chaney High School in Youngstown from 2010 to 2014 and then was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Edinboro University and Westminster College, both in Pennsylvania.

While at Westminster, he also was the head coach of the men’s tennis team.

During his college days, Whipple was a three-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II All-American basketball player at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, where he played from 2005 to 2008.
