Toys, wrestling mix at Liberty expo

LIBERTY — Vendors showcased toys and collectibles from all over the country Saturday at Toyhio at The Metroplex Expo Center. The event also featured autograph signings by four professional wrestlers from All Elite Wrestling.

Although this was the 16th such event in the past five years, organizer Rick Fusselman was as excited as ever.

“We brought in three new wrestlers. The vendors and inventory are always changing. You never know what to expect,” Fusselman said.

Melinda Nice of Middleburg Heights came to the show for the third time.

“You can find anything you didn’t know you wanted,” she said.

She showed off a doll depicting one of her favorite NASCAR drivers, Bill Elliott.

Chris Martini made the two-hour trip from St. Mary’s, Pa. He said he comes mostly to meet the wrestlers.

He is a big fan of Kip Sabian because he has colorful hair and “an edgier look.” Martini said the wrestlers always are very personable, even the ones who play “heels” in the ring. He likes AEW because, unlike WWE, they are more approachable, and he has a lot of respect for “anyone who can take the risk” to perform in the ring.

Poland resident Justin Arroyo, 13, attended with his grandfather, Luis. He said he loves the toys, especially the games. He found a Sega Genesis video game that he wanted for half of what it would cost him at a store.

One table was not set up to make a profit. U.S.S. Renegade, the local chapter of Starfleet, which bills itself as “the oldest continuously operating Star Trek Fan Organization,” attended to raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Actress Hilda Rodriguez of Austintown called herself the Tribble Trainer and wore a suit made of tribbles, the lovable and prolific creatures from an original “Star Trek” episode. She enjoys dressing up but also helping to alleviate hunger in the Valley.

“Vice Admiral” John Hoppa said U.S.S. Renegade started almost 30 years ago. It meets monthly to talk about the show, but members also consider charitable work to be part of their mission.

The four wrestlers, Kip Sabian, Penelope Ford, The Bunny and Rosemary, sat at a table throughout most of the event, signing autographs and having their pictures taken. They do so much traveling between matches and promotional events that when Rosemary was asked if this was her first time in Youngstown, she responded, “I think so, but I’m not sure.”

Sabian said the hardest part of the day for him is wanting to sneak away and look at the displays “to see if I can get a steal.” Despite greeting hundreds of people for several hours, he said he enjoys doing it.

“As a wrestler, you have to be a wrestling fan. With every person I meet, we have something in common,” he said.
