JCC synthetic ice rink opens today for skating

YOUNGSTOWN — The winter campus at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown opens today and includes a synthetic ice rink for skating and curling.

The campus, located at 505 Gypsy Lane, will be open through Jan. 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, according to a news release from the JCC.

Skates and curling equipment are available to rent, and snacks will be available for purchase. Other than equipment rentals, skating is free, but reservations are recommended. To make a reservation, visit jccyoungstown.org/wintercampus.

The rink features synthetic ice that isn’t reliant on cold conditions. The JCC was able to secure $100,000 in grants from major sponsors Western Reserve Health Foundation, the Youngstown Foundation and the J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation.

The funds covered the cost of the rink, signs and a snack station for the rink, which debuted in late November 2019. It didn’t open for the 2020-21 season because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The release notes special events this season include Hanukkah on Ice 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 22 and a New Year’s Skate 4 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 1.
