Class in Hubbard premieres Spanish television network

HUBBARD — Hubbard High School Spanish IV students have used their creativity to debut a Spanish television network at the school.

The students showcased their Spanish skills with the recent premiere of their network in March.

Students in Anna Badurik’s Spanish IV class have been working for the last several weeks on generating content for the project.

Badurik said the students produced and edited several Spanish TV shows that have been broadcast in the high school auditorium and viewed by students in the lower level Spanish classes. The 50-minute broadcast has been shown throughout the day during various class periods.

This Spanish IV class wanted to be creative by integrating Spanish culture and film. The students have spent about a month-and-a-half producing and editing a Spanish TV show that includes comedy, drama, action and sports.

To coincide with the debut of the Spanish network, the Spanish IV students also have been collecting donations and selling concessions to raise money for the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, which aids Hispanic people around the world in a multitude of ways.

Badurik said the Spanish TV show is part of the seniors’ class project for Spanish IV. She said each year, the Spanish IV seniors have to come up with an idea for their project and this year, they voted to produce, write, record and edit their own network and broadcast it to the lower Spanish classes.

“The students took ownership of this project and worked extremely hard. This was a great display of the knowledge they have acquired throughout the course of their Spanish studies. They truly enjoyed sharing their project with the younger students, and the younger students were impressed and inspired by the work and talent of the older students,” Badurik said.

Badurik said the students’ idea must include these components: writing, research, speaking, listening, culture and service.

The final recorded Spanish TV version included a family with Badurik and some of the Spanish IV students watching television, and each time they changed the channel, a different show or commercial appeared on the screen.

“Each segment that they watched was written, directed and edited by the Spanish IV students. The students were the actors in every scene as well. Therefore, they had to practice and memorize their lines,” Badurik said.

AWARDS CEREMONY

Badurik said the students also held an awards ceremony, where students voted for their classmates as best actor, best show and best writer.

“Prior to attending the event, Mrs. Badurik had told us that the students had put a lot of time into the project, and the finished product reflected that. It was really well done, and my friends and I enjoyed watching it,” said Richie Sandberg, a junior and Spanish III student.

“As the head editor, I was nervous that the other segments that my classmates were in charge of editing were not going to fit in with the rest of the segments. But after seeing the hard work and effort put into each one, it worked out perfectly, and the final video was very satisfying,” said Robbie Gawdyda, a senior in Spanish IV.

“It was a lot of fun getting to work with all of our classmates to create this project. It was rewarding to see it turn out so well after all of the hard work and effort that was put into the project,” said senior Gillian Ryser.

Badurik said the project “will surely be a lasting memory from their school years, and something that will make them proud when reflecting on their school days and accomplishments.”

She said the students are also pleased to make a sizable contribution to the Hispanic Heritage Foundation.

“It’s great to know that they have helped people through their work,” Badurik said.
