‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign kicks off
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Traffic Safety Office kicked off the statewide annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign on Monday.
The campaign runs through May 31, with extra enforcement until then. Officials from the state agencies, the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office and Trumbull County Safe Communities hosted a news conference Monday at the Trumbull County Emergency Management Agency to begin the campaign.
The campaign focuses on seatbelt usage when driving. More law enforcement will be out on the roads during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Under current Ohio law, not wearing a seatbelt is a secondary offense, meaning a police officer cannot pull you over without first witnessing another primary violation. However, state officials are fighting to make not wearing a seatbelt a primary offense.
No matter what type of vehicle you drive, one of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up, according to the patrol.
The campaign reminds drivers and their passengers of the importance of buckling up and the legal consequences — including fines — for not wearing a seat belt.
