NEWTON TOWNSHIP — A woman was hospitalized after she saved her pet Pomeranian from an attack Monday by a neighborhood pit bull.

Officers investigated the incident that occurred shortly after 9 a.m. in the 5100 block of Broadway Avenue in the township, according to a report with the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office.

The 52-year-old woman, who lives on Taylor Avenue, was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for treatment of her injuries after she took her dog to a veterinarian on South Canal Street, the report states.

Deputies visited the woman in the emergency room. She had blood on her face, the report states, and she was being treated for multiple puncture wounds and cuts on her arm. The woman, who did not receive stitches, told deputies her tooth was loosened when she tried to bite the pit bull’s ear.

The woman told deputies she let her dogs out on her property and heard screams from the Pomeranian named Kevin. The woman rushed to the dog’s aid as she got between the two fighting canines, the report states.

The Pomeranian was in stable condition after being treated for multiple puncture wounds, the report states.

The owner of the pit bull, identified as William Dempsey, 42, of Broadway Avenue, Newton Falls, was issued a summons by the dog warden on a charge of failure to keep the animal under proper restraint. Dempsey told deputies the pit bull broke free of his tie-out, and he was not aware of the attack.
