COVID-19 concerns postpone hearing in child’s murder case

YOUNGSTOWN — A hearing that was supposed to take place Wednesday in the Kimoni Bryant aggravated murder case was postponed until next Wednesday after Bryant sat down at the defense table and informed his attorneys that there was COVID-19 in his pod at the Mahoning County jail.

After discussion among the attorneys and Judge Anthony D’Apolito, the hearing was postponed to 2 p.m. next Wednesday.

Among the likely issues to be discussed at the hearing is a motion filed by Bryant’s attorneys asking again that the defense be allowed to have a representative present when a laboratory tests the DNA collected in the case.

It is an issue that has delayed the progress of the case for months with prosecutors saying they cannot find a lab that will allow an observer in their lab.

Bryant is one of three men charged with aggravated murder in the Sept. 21, 2020, murder of Rowan Sweeney, 4, in a Perry Street home in Struthers.

If convicted, the three defendants could get the death penalty. Bryant’s co-defendants are Brandon Crump Jr., 18, and Andre McCoy, 21, who has not been located since he was indicted.
