WHAT: Board of Education meeting Wednesday

PRESENT: Don Newell, Tony Pantone, Rocky Adams, Amanda O’Neill and Bill Cummings

The Board:

• Heard from Superintendent Ray Soloman that for the 2021-22 school year, students will attend classes in person five days a week, and masks will be a choice of the parents. He said masks are required for all students and staff on school buses at least until Sept. 13 based on state guidelines that may be either ended or extended then. The first day for students is Aug. 25;

• Gave final approval for placing a 4.2-mill, five-year renewal operating levy on the Nov. 2 general election ballot to raise $986,000 for day-to-day needs and operations of the district. The levy was first passed five years ago. Officials said with a renewal levy there is no increase in taxes;

• Approved Angela Walsh as high school math support teacher to be paid by ESSER II funds;

• Approved retirement resignation of Diane Shyrock as middle school teacher effective June 1;

• Hired Samuel Esposito as swim instructor / coach at $10 per hour;

• Received $2.5 million total in federal ESSER grants for the district;

• Named Adams as delegate and Newell as alternate for the Ohio School Board Association annual meeting;

• Recognized high school art students Gabe Gilliland and Mallory Greenamyer as Congressional Art Competition winners;

• Heard from Soloman that bus inspections went well.

WHAT: City council meetings July 6 and 19

PRESENT: Bill Williams, Bonnie Viele, Robin Zambrini, Michael Mogg, Michael Toda, Jerome C. Crowe, Michael E. Kerr, Ryan M. Hallapy and Mayor Ben Kyle

Council:

• Entered into a contract with Kirila Contractors Inc. of Brookfield for 2021 street resurfacing not to exceed $295,256. Scheduled to be resurfaced are sections of Erie Street, Oak Knoll, Center Street, Burdie Drive, Westview Avenue, Jerry Avenue and Doris Avenue;

• Entered into a Community Housing Improvement partnership with Cortland, Girard and Niles for 2021 in seeking community housing impact and preservation funds. Kyle said four residents of the city have already applied for CHIP grant funds for housing assistance. He said with four cities applying, the amount of money awarded gets bigger;

• Entered into a contract with Richardson Tree Service and Landscape Co. until 2023 at a cost not to exceed $60,000 per year for tree trimming services. Kyle said the city’s light department needs trees trimmed back for electrical wires and streetlights;

• Approved paying the city prosecutor $1,200 per month to prosecute cases at Girard Municipal Court;

• Approved having MS Consultants, as the city’s project manager, to submit an application for Issue II monies for the 2022 street resurfacing program. The application deadline is Aug 30;

• Heard from Mogg about an engineer’s drawing of a columbarium for the cemetery. He said meetings discussing what the city is seeking have taken place;

• Reported that Waughfield Park parking lot has been enlarged, paved and striped;

• Announced council will be on summer recess for the month of August. The next meeting is scheduled Sept. 6.

WHAT: Board of Education meeting June 28

PRESENT: Amanda O’Neill, Rocky Adams, William Cummings, Don Newell and Tony Pantone Jr.

The board:

• Discussed the return to school for the 2021-22 year with information posted on the district’s website. Among the guidelines is that unless someone has been fully vaccinated, masks will be required. Staff, students and visitors are encouraged to maintain social distancing of 3 feet to the extent possible in and out of the classroom. When groups of 10 or more are gathered, consideration will be given to seating and room size to maintain physical distancing among staff, students and visitors;

• Received a $1,000 donation from Braydich Dental to Kraken swimming / diving blocks;

• Received a $ 50,451 grant to be used for the purchase of a school bus. The district has received $1,136,336 in ESSER II funds and $93,621 in coronavirus relief funds;

• Approved a one-year, 210-day limited contract for Mary Mathews-Bebech, director of pupil services, effective July 1 at $52,000;

• Approved a three-year, 260-day contract for Kevin Hogue, as director of athletics, effective July 1;

• Approved a three-year, 260-day contract to Mona Jones as transportation supervisor, effective July 1;

• Approved Dominic Panozzo, swim instructor at $10 per hour, beginning June 2 and Giovanni Walley as swim instructor at $10 per hour effective June 21;

• Approved the date of senior graduation on the 2021-22 district calendar for May 25, 2022;

• Approved a two-year, 260-day contract for Aaron Wirtz, Kraken swimming head coach, effective July 1;

• Approved Danielle Aurandt, elementary school evening music coordinator for the 2021-22 school year.
