Sebring man gets nine months

Sentenced for trying to have sex with teen

YOUNGSTOWN — James P. Schreckengost, 24, of West California Avenue in Sebring was sentenced to nine months in prison Tuesday after he pleaded guilty in February to doing drugs with a girl, 16, and then attempting to have sexual contact with her after she passed out.

The girl had gone to the apartment to do drugs March 20, 2020, prosecutors said. While she was there, “she smoked roughly four bowls of marijuana with the defendant,” Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court said, reading from a presentence report of Schreckengost’s background and conduct.

Afterward, Schreckengost provided the girl with a white, powdery substance, and she “blacked out,” said Kevin Day, an assistant county prosecutor.

When she awoke, Schreckengost was attempting to have sex with her, Day said.

Schreckengost also was on probation when the offense occurred, and Schreckengost violated the terms of his probation on an earlier misdemeanor case twice, Day noted.

As part of his plea agreement, Schreckengost will be classified as a sex offender and has to register with the sheriff in the place where he lives once per year for 15 years.

Before sentencing, Schreckengost told the judge he had been on house arrest for the past year and a month and was hoping he could go home.

“This was a real bad thing that happened here,” Krichbaum told Schreckengost, saying his conduct “infuriates me.” The judge added: “I have to impress upon you the gravity of what happened here.”
