YSU students caught partying at University Edge

Police break up gathering of about 150 at the Edge

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University officials are warning students who participated in a large weekend gathering that they threaten the well-being of everyone on campus.

The event at 11:36 p.m. Saturday, outside of the University Edge apartments, 351 Lincoln Ave., involved 120 to 150 people, according to a YSU Police Department call log.

“Such gatherings are unacceptable and put the entire campus at risk,” Ron Cole, university spokesman, said in a written statement. “Students violating safety guidelines are subject to action via the Student Code of Conduct.”

The university in recent weeks encouraged students not to participate in activities that attract large crowds. It has been reminding students and employees to remain socially distant from one another and to wash hands frequently.

“Only by working together and taking responsibility for ourselves and others will we be able to keep YSU safe and maintain on-campus operations,” Cole said.

Responding to a noise complaint, a YSU police report noted that temporary stop signs at the corner of Fifth and Lincoln avenues had been removed.

Between 120 and 150 people had to be dispersed from the scene.

University Edge is privately managed.

The residence halls that are on the YSU campus proper opened at reduced capacity, modifying several double occupancy rooms to single rooms for students seeking additional distancing measures.

In preparation for the new school year, which began Monday, all campus buildings have been inspected and approved by the YSU Office of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety.

The university has been encouraging all students, faculty, staff or anyone else coming to campus to have daily health assessments conducted.

Ten mobile hand-washing stations have been installed across campus and disinfecting wipes / sprays are being provided in classrooms.

Cole asked those who attended the large gathering to get a health assessment and monitor for possible COVID-19 symptoms.

“If you have symptoms or if you have had contact with someone who has tested positive in the past 14 days, follow appropriate protocols by contacting the Office of Student Outreach and Support,” he said.
