Statewide COVID-19 cases rise

The Mahoning Valley saw increases of a few COVID-19 cases and an uptick of new deaths in Trumbull County, according to information released Monday on the global pandemic.

Statewide deaths increased by 16 to 2,927 on Monday, according to the Ohio Department of Health. There was also 8,249 hospitalizations statewide reported. There are now 57,956 cases reported in Ohio.

Last week, Gov. Mike DeWine identified Trumbull County as a hot spot for the virus. He categorized the county under a Level 3 (red) COVID-19 alert level, meaning there is very high exposure and spread.

With the alert, the Trumbull County Combined Health District is recommending that everyone limit daily activities, avoid mass gatherings, practice social distance and wear masks.

Trumbull County Combined Health District reported there are 15 new cases Monday, for a total of 981 cases.

The department reports 53 people are in quarantine and being monitored. Warren City has 51 in quarantine. Officials said they also are keeping track of 16 suspect cases in the Ohio Disease Reporting System.

Monday, Trumbull County had five new deaths bringing total deaths to 75.

The Ohio Department of Health reported Mahoning County increased by seven to 1,832 COVID-19 cases and remained at 232 deaths.

Columbiana County increased by four to 1,307 cases and remained at 60 deaths.

DeWine’s next scheduled coronavirus briefing from the statehouse is set for today.

Meanwhile, the state still is wrestling with whether to mandate face masks. Various Ohio cities are instituting their own mask mandates.
