Coroner identifies man found shot to death

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the man shot to death early Tuesday on South Avenue as Ramon Cooper, 29.

Police, meanwhile, said there is video from the bar where Cooper and another man fought prior to the shooting, and detectives are “making progress.”

Capt. Brad Blackburn of the Youngstown Police Department detective bureau said he would not comment on what the video shows and won’t comment on whether police have a suspect.

There have been no arrests. “They are working the case,” Blackburn said of detectives.

Police said earlier that Cooper and another man got into a fight in a South Avenue bar near where Ramon’s body was found at the intersection of South and Florida avenues.

“Bar security separated the parties, but they confronted each other again outside, and that is when the victim was shot,” city detectives said in a news release.

Cooper was found in the road after police were called there at 1:09 a.m. for gunshots. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he died.
