Assault at Youngstown’s private prison extends inmate’s sentence

YOUNGSTOWN — Dakota M. Eaton, 25, who has about four years left in a prison sentence out of Cuyahoga County, will serve an additional 18 months for assaulting a corrections officer at the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center.

Eaton was convicted during a trial before Judge Maureen Sweeney last month in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Eaton was in prison for aggravated robbery and felonious assault.

He was convicted of felony assault in the prison crime, which carried a possible prison sentence of three years.

Aaron Meikle, assistant county prosecutor, said Eaton assaulted the officer after the officer gave Eaton supplies, but Eaton wanted something else. Eaton refused to return to his pod, and the corrections officer used pepper spray on him.

Eaton attacked the officer, taking him to the floor, Meikle said.
