SCOUTS EARN BADGE DURING PANDEMIC: Five Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 9002 in Poland recently completed one of Scouting’s more difficult merit badges — the Hiking Merit Badge. The Scouts included Gabe Dearing, Evan Hamady, Pat Kelly, Luke Lantz, Ralph Mould and Cole Williams. They were joined by troop adult leaders Tony Di Tommaso, Albin Dearing and Pat Kelly.

To earn the rank of Eagle, each Scout must attain 21 merit badges, including 13 that are “Eagle Required.” Of the 13, one must have to do with physical fitness — either cycling, swimming, or hiking. Physical fitness is blended throughout the entire Scouting program, and Baden Powell — the founder of Scouting — is known to have believed “A boy is not a sitting-down animal.”

To earn the Hiking Merit Badge, the Scouts of Troop 9002 had to complete: One 5-mile hike, three 10-mile hikes, one 15-mile hike, and one 20-mile hike. The final hike was completed in the Cuyahoga National Park and included parts of the towpath, the Buckeye Trail and the Brandywine Falls Trail. It took just short of nine hours and covered 21.8 miles, averaging 2.5 miles per hour.

For additional information about Troop 9002, or area boys 11-18 who would like to join the troop, can visit the troop’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Troop9002PolandOhio/
