Immigrants subject of Cultural Alliance program, dinner

Mahoning Valley Cultural Alliance announces its upcoming Stories of Mahoning Valley Immigrants series will focus on English immigrants for its next program at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, Canfield.

The speaker will be Peter Norris, a Youngstown State University chemistry professor who was born and raised in England. The meal will be provided by the church’s caterers, and pianist Roman Rudnytsky will perform.

The event starts at 5 p.m. May 6. The cost is $35 for Mahoning Valley Historical Society members and $40 for non-members.

The deadline for reservations is Wednesday, and they can be made by calling 330-743-2589.

Medici offers watercolor, acrylic classes

Community art classes are planned in May at Medici Museum of Art. 9350 E. Market St., Howland.

Mary Sinclair will teach watercolors for beginners from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and acrylic for beginners from 4 to 6 p.m. on five consecutive Fridays from May 3 to 31. The classes are open to those ages 13 and older.

The cost is $120 per class and can be paid online at medicimuseum.art or by check made out to the museum. For more information, call 330-856-2120.

Emerging Artists perform ‘Bremen Town Musicians’

The Emerging Artists of Opera Western Reserve will perform the children’s opera “The Bremen Town Musicians” at 2 p.m. May 5 at the Ford Family Recital Hall of DeYor Performing Arts Center, 260 W. Federal St., Youngstown.

An animal ensemble featuring a donkey, rooster, cat and dog learn to work together as they travel to Bremen for a concert. This operatic version of “The Town Musicians of Bremen” contains music by Jacques Offenbach, Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, Sir Arthur Sullivan and Giuseppe Verdi.

OWR’s Emerging Artists perform at schools and camps in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Havana House displays work of Youngstown artist

The paintings of Hector Gonzalez will be on display starting Friday at Havana House, 5801 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles.

Gonzalez is a painter and sculptor who has been commissioned for multiple murals in the area, and it will feature many works that are being exhibited for the first time.

The opening event at 7 p.m. will include music by Matt Skeen and appearances by Luciano Meirelles of Luciano Cigars and former NBA basketball player Ron Harper. Admission is free.

Brass ensemble plays Arts on Atlantic concert

Park Avenue Brass will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE, Warren, as part of its Arts on Atlantic concert series.

Park Avenue Brass is an ensemble of five music educators in Northeast Ohio that performs for weddings, special occasions and civic events, school programs, and church and religious services and ceremonies. Sunday’s program will feature movie scores.

Admission is free.

St. Robert concert helps to support scholarship fund

A concert benefiting the Father Carl Kish Scholarship Fund is scheduled at 7 p.m. Saturday at St Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 4659 state Route 46, Cortland.

Sponsored by the St. Robert’s Youth Group, the concert will be hosted by Bob Ochtyun and will include Michelle Jones and Anthony Ruggiero on piano, Rosario Giuliano on harmonica, Michael Valiski on drums, Bill Costas on bass and Ochtyun on guitar. Vocalists include Jessica Stiffler, Joe Scott, Jones, Vera Kelly, Ken Shimek, Jane Organ, Lisa Blair and Sandy Chadwick.

A free-will offering will be collected for the scholarship fund, which was established in 2016.

Warren library to host mushroom program April 27

A program on “Wild Mushrooms, A World of Wonder at Our Feet” is scheduled at 2 p.m. April 27 at the Warren-Trumbull County Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren.

Walt Sturgeon of the Ohio Mushroom Society will discuss distinctive edible and toxic species, folklore, bioluminescent fungi and hallucinogens.

Admission is free but advance registration is required by calling 330-399-8807 ext. 200.

Women’s Club sets garden events

“Lilacs Then & Now: will be the topic of the first of five programs in the Columbiana Women’s Club’s 2024 Garden Events at Isabelle Firestone Gathering Place & Gardens at Harvey S. Firestone Recreational Park, 338 E. Park Ave., Columbiana.

Skip McCullough will be the speaker for the program at noon May 2. Additional programs include “What the Buzz About Pollinator Gardens?” on June 6, “Hydrangeas in the Landscape” on July 25, “Harvesting & Preserving” and “Careers in Gardening & Horticulture” on Aug. 16 and “Color in the Autumn Garden” on Oct. 5.

Tickets are $25 for the luncheon and program on May 2 or $15 for the program only. RSVPs are required. For more information, call 330-207-1470.
