Women’s art show opens at AAC gallery

The Ashtabula Arts Center gallery celebrates Women’s History Month with its 2024 Women’s Show.

The annual juried show is dedicated to art pieces created by women, for women and about women. This year’s call for art received the highest number of submissions the show has seen at the Arts Center.

The juror for the show was Carol Leikala, a visual storyteller / illustrator whose artwork reflects the quiet, simple moments of everyday life. After teaching high school art for 33 years, she retired in 2019 and currently works as an artist and as a teacher at Stella’s Art Gallery in Willoughby.

In her statement about the show, Leikala said, “It was an honor to be invited to judge this year’s Women’s Show at the Ashtabula Arts Center. I was blown away– not only by the quantity of work submitted but also by the quality of work submitted. The scope and depth of this show is very impressive. Although I was immediately drawn to the beautiful textile pieces, each of the artworks in this show is worthy of your undivided time and attention. Choosing award winners was a very difficult task. After much deliberation, I chose to recognize those works of art that spoke directly to me. These are pieces that drew me in and had me returning again and again to look at them. I hope that you enjoy viewing these works as much as I did.”

The work will be on display through March 28 at the gallery 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula. A reception is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and admission is free.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. For more information, go to ashtabulaarts
