Pinball wizards descend on Past Times, ‘Rotten’ horror film debuts in Boardman

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

• Players from several states are coming to Past Times Pinball & Video Arcade in Girard this weekend for what is being billed as the largest Mega Match Play tournament ever held in Ohio.

Past Times owner Robert Berk said players are coming from seven states to earn points and move up in the rankings of the International Flipper Pinball Association (ifpap inball.com).

“A lot have been playing for a long time and follow the circuit, so to speak,” Berk said.

The event is being organized by Fred Cochran and John Delzoppo, who have been presented in IFPA events in Pittsburgh and Cleveland over the years.

The 100 slots for competitors were filled within 4 minutes of going on sale, and there is a waiting list of players hoping to take their spots if anyone drops out.

“It typically happens with events, but more with the ones that have been around for a while and have a good reputation,” Delzoppo said.

The chance to visit Past Times, which Berk opened last year in the former Santisi’s IGA supermarket building, probably was a lure for some of the players, Delzoppo said. It has about 400 pinball machines and another 250 arcade games.

The players will be working flippers and hitting metal balls for 20 rounds on Saturday between 11 a.m. and midnight. Players will face off in groups of four on different machines with the winner getting 4 points, second place 2 points, third place 1 point and fourth place zero points in each round.

Those with the most points in the different classes will continue to compete on Sunday for a portion of the $2,800 prize pool and international ranking points.

“It’s mentally and physically exhausting for a game that looks pretty passive,” Delzoppo said.

Ohio is one of the more active states in IFPA, but Delzoppo said there are competitions around the country nearly every weekend.

The Girard competition is not open to spectators, but it will be livestreamed online via Twitch at twitch.tv/NEOpinball for those who want to check it out.

• A low-budget horror film shot in Western Pennsylvania will have its world premiere on Sunday in Boardman.

“Rotten: Welcome to the Freak Show” is the latest film by New Castle, Pa., filmmaker Vince Burkett, whose writing and directing credits include “Normal Violence,” “The Allegheny Demon” and “Survival of the Wolves.”

“Rotten” is described as a mix of horror and humor that follows a bullied youth with a skin disease. After being attacked and left for dead by classmates he is rescued by a sideshow ringmaster and forced into a carnival sideshow.

It was shot in New Castle using local talent.

According to Burkett, “We are beyond excited to share our latest film with the world,” Burkett said. “We put our heart and soul into this project, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience it. It’s a love letter to the horror genre and a celebration of our local community.”

It will premiere at 6 p.m. Sunday at Movies 8, 469 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman. Tickets are $10 and are available online at rottenworldpre miere.rsvpify.com. All ticket buyers will receive a digital download of the movie.
