Simply Slavic sets 15th baking contest
Simply Slavic is seeking entries for its annual baking contest on June 14.
This year’s themes are “15 Years of Baking Tradition” and “250 Years of American Freedom,” recognizing the generations of immigrants who carried treasured recipes and cultural traditions to the Mahoning Valley.
Nonprofessional bakers are invited to showcase homemade Slavic baked goods and the stories behind them — from family holiday recipes to regional specialties passed down through generations.
Entries will be judged on taste (50%), authenticity (25%) and presentation (25%). Participants are encouraged to submit baked goods with Slavic roots, including pastries, breads, cookies, cakes and traditional desserts representing cultures from across Eastern Europe.
The entry fee is $5 for adults and free for participants ages 17 and younger. Space is limited to 10 contestants on a first-come, first-served basis, and entries must be submitted by June 7.
The judging and winners will be announced at an event from noon to 3 p.m. June 14 at SMARTS, 25 E. Boardman St., Youngstown, and the winners will be recognized at the Simply Slavic festival from June 26 to 28 at Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre.
Entry forms, official rules and additional details are available at SimplySlavic.org. For questions, contact: bakingcontest@simplyslavic.org.
