Cleveland film fest announces lineup

The Cleveland International Film Festival has released the full slate of offerings for its 48th edition.

This year’s festival will run from April 3 to 13 for in-person screening at downtown Cleveland’s Playhouse Square, and some of the movies will be available without the hourlong drive through the CIFF Streams program from April 14 to 21. It will screen 137 feature films and 225 shorts representing 60 countries between the two events.

Festival attendees will find some movie stars and Oscar winners on screen. “The Idea of You,” a drama / romance starring Anne Hathaway, will play at the festival three weeks before it opens on at least 2,000 screens nationwide. “Ezra,” directed by Tony Goldwyn (“Ghost,” “Oppenheimer”), stars Robert De Niro and Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne.

But the festival also is an opportunity to take a chance on adventurous works from unknown filmmakers or foreign films that will get little or no theatrical release in this country or even turn up on one of the major streaming services.

“Poor Things” won four Academy Awards on Sunday, but CIFF attendees became aware of director Yorgos Lanthimos’ work more than a decade ago. Early films by Cleveland’s Anthony and Joe Russo played the festival long before they became part of the Marvel universe.

One of my favorite film fest memories is seeing Todd Haynes’ short film “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” there in the late ’80s. He didn’t have the rights to any of the music, so it never received an official release, but there is a grainy, low-quality version on YouTube, and it feels particularly timely considering the top-grossing movie of the last year.

Oftentimes the screenings are accompanied by Q&As by the directors, producers and other contributors.

The festival opens with “Thelma,” featuring a rare starring role by June Squibb (best known for Alexander Payne’s “About Schmidt” and “Nebraska”) and the final screen appearance by Richard Roundtree. It premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival and will be released by Magnolia Pictures.

Closing the festival will be another Sundance offering, this one with a northeast Ohio connection — “Devo,” a documentary on the innovative Akron band of the same name. It features new interviews and rare footage chronicling the band’s career by director Chris Smith, whose documentaries include “American Movie” and “Fyre.”

Since this year’s film festival falls during the total solar eclipse that will darken northeast Ohio, organizers also planned Retro Eclipse Screenings for April 8.

The lineup will include “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” at 6 p.m., a comedy shorts retro program at 6:15 p.m. and the 2013 science fiction film “Coherence” at 8:30 p.m.

“Coherence” played the festival when it first was released, and this year’s festival also includes the latest effort by its director, James Ward Byrkit — “Shattered Belt,” a series of interconnected sci-fit stories. It’s described in the CIFF schedule as, “a bit like `Black Mirror’s’ friendlier, indie film cousin.”

For in-person screenings, tickets are $16 for CIFF members and $18 for non-members. Tickets for CIFF Streams screenings are $12 for CIFF members and $14 for non-members.
