TCHS presents dinner with a side of history

Gray Areas

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

• The Trumbull County Historical Society and Saratoga Restaurant are partnering on an event that will serve up a little history along with its menu.

The dinner on March 9 will feature a five-course meal with drink pairings with each course, and the evening also will include information about one of the area’s oldest dining establishments.

Chrisi Economos, who co-owns the Saratoga with her brother, Eric Economos, said the idea came from Ryan MacLennan, director of operations and outreach for the historical society.

“It was all Ryan,” she said. “And I told him he better do his homework, because I’m not talking. Public speaking gives me anxiety.”

According to MacLennan, “At TCHS, we love the history of Trumbull County’s food culture. We wanted to find a way to highlight that, and the idea of doing community dinners with local family restaurants seemed like the best way to do that.

“Saratoga is the oldest running restaurant in Warren and they have supported our work for years. We’re thrilled to highlight the history behind the family and the foods that built what they are today.”

Saratoga opened in 1916 and has been operated by three generations of the Economos family since 1935.

“My grandfather and his brother Nick bought it in 1935, and in 1960 my dad (James Economos, who died in 2015) started managing it,” Economos said. “My brother and I partnered with dad in 1988.”

The menu for the dinner will start with charcuterie and a glass of champagne, followed by chicken and rice soup, Saratoga salad, lollipop lamb chops with smashed redskin potatoes and bread pudding for dessert.

“Bread pudding is something that used to be on the menu back in the day,” Economos said, and it is something the restaurant still features on occasion.

Drink pairings for the rest of the menu haven’t been finalized.

The dinner starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are $50 and are available through Eventbrite.

TCHS hopes the dinner is the first of many such events.

“We certainly want to continue this as a series,” MacLennan said. “Our goal is to highlight other family owned businesses to shine a light on the people who have made Trumbull County’s food culture so vibrant.”

• Youngstown’s Anthony LaMarca often is touring the world as a member of The War on Drugs, and this summer will be no different.

The band’s current itinerary includes concerts in Ireland, England, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark and Norway.

However, local audiences won’t need a passport to see LaMarca and the band. This week the band announced a tour with The National that will include a pavilion-only show at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls on Sept. 21. Lucius will open.

The War on Drugs won a Grammy for best rock album in 2018 for its “A Deeper Understanding” release. LaMarca plays guitar and keyboards with The War on Drugs and also releases his own music as The Building.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through Live Nation.
