McDonough starts 2024 with 5 shows

Five exhibitions open Friday at the McDonough Museum of Art.

“Roberly Bell: Always and the Lake” features sculptures by Bell, whose work has been shown internationally. Based in Massachusetts, she is the recipient of a Fullbright scholarship to Turkey, a Pollock Krasner Fellowship and a New York Foundation for the Arts award.

Bell describes her work as “straddling the space between representation and abstraction” and “a conglomeration of contrasting elements.”

“Quemar Las Naves” features the work of Jonathon Brewer, an electroacoustic musician, audio engineer and composer whose work draws inspiration from quantum physics, consciousness, chaos theory and sociology.

His creations involve using generative systems and processes for music making. He has music degrees from Eastern Kentucky University and Austin Peay State University.

“A Map Both Distant and Concrete” features the creations of Lauren Semivan, who has a bachelor’s degree in studio art from Lawrence University and a master’s degree in photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Her work has been exhibited at Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Cranbrook Art Museum, Blue Sky Gallery, Silver Eye Center for Photography, Paris Photo, The Griffin Museum of Photography, The Hunterdon Art Museum and the Museum of Wisconsin Art.

“Posters Without Borders” began in 2013 as an international invitational poster exhibition on the subject of immigration. Following its success, organizers decided to mount new exhibitions every two years on other important social subjects.

“Civilitas” is the most recent exhibition, featuring a group of designers who were invited to create posters that addressed the need for more civility in the world.

“Are you on the menu” features the work of emerging artist Morgan Bukovec from Cleveland. The exhibition is inspired by her decade of work in the service industry, and each remark, command and question are quotes taken from interactions with male customers.

All five exhibitions will be on display through March 2 at the McDonough, 525 Wick Ave., Youngstown. An opening reception is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, go to ysu.edu/mcdonough-museum or call 330-941-1371.
