Packard band moves indoors for fall shows

WARREN — Trombones and Colellas will be in the spotlight as the Packard Concert Band returns to indoor performances Sunday.

“Broadway at the Movies and a Trombone or Two … or 76” will feature three longtime band members splitting guest conductor duties — Robert J. Barnett, Frank Cosenza and David Colella.

Barnett has been the Packard band’s principal timpanist for 38 years and has held the same position witah the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra for 44 years. He has been an adjunct professor at both Youngstown State University and University of Mount Union, and he is music director of the Salem Quaker City Band and plays with the Youngstown Saxon Band.

Cosenza is co-principal trumpet with the Packard band and has played with the Big Band Sound of Packard. He is the conductor of the Lakeland Community College Civic Band and conducts for the Cleveland Federation of Musicians and the Windjammers Unlimited (Circus Music Historical Society).

Colella is conductor of the Blue Coat Band in Mahoningtown, Pa., and retired after 35 years of teaching in the Carollton Exempted School District.

Colella will play euphonium and will be joined by his trombone-playing sons, D.J. Colella and Staff Sgt. Anthony Colella, on Walter Alan Finlayson’s “Bright Eyes.”

D.J. Colella is director of bands in Girard City Schools, assistant conductor of the Canfield Community Band and a member of the Blue Coat Band, Lowellville Mount Carmel Band and Guys Without Ties.

Anthony Colella joined the U.S. Army Field Band in June 2020 and previously played in the 122nd Army National Guard Band of Ohio. He also is the trombonist in the U.S. Army Field Band Quintet. He also will be the featured soloist on “Blue Bells of Scotland.”

Other selections on the program will include selections from “Les Miserables” and “The Sound of Music,” “Gee, Officer Krupke” from “West Side Story” “76 Trombones” from “The Music Man,” and several medleys of movie and Broadway favorites.

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Sunday at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. Admission is free, and funding is provided by the W.D. Packard trust.
