‘Prom’ closes season for Porthouse Theatre

Porthouse Theatre ends its summer season with the regional debut of the musical “The Prom.”

The Matthew Sklar / Chad Beguelin / Bob Martin musical tells the story of four Broadway veterans who travel to a small town, where a young woman isn’t allowed to bring her girlfriend to prom. \

The foursome hopes to put the spotlight on the issue — and themselves — in a musical about inspiring people to accept their differences, being the star they always were meant to be, and that immortal truth: There’s no business like getting in other people’s business.

“The Prom” was nominated for six 2019 Tony Awards, including best musical, best book of a musical and best score. A film version premiered on Netflix in 2020 starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden and Andrew Rannells.

Eric van Baars, former director of the School of Theatre and Dance at Kent State University, will play Barry, the character Corden played in the film.

According to van Baars, “‘The Prom’ is a fabulous musical with a great message, lots of laughs and a huge heart. The story touches me deeply. I’m thrilled to be back at Porthouse and collaborating with so many friends, both old and new.”

It will be directed by Porthouse producing artistic director Terri Kent with music direction by Alexandre Marr and choreography by Martin Cespedes.

“The Prom” runs Saturday through Aug. 6 at Porthouse Theatre on the grounds of Blossom Music Center, 1145 W. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls. Tickets are available at www.porthouse

theatre.com and by calling 330-672-3884.
