ACTS presents ‘Rhapsody in Gershwin’ in Sharon

ACTS wraps its first season at its new home in Sharon, Pa., with the musical revue “Rhapsody in Gershwin.”

Director Ron Sinesio created the revue when he started a theater in Rochester, N.Y.

“I didn’t have the money to do book shows because I couldn’t afford the royalties,” he said.

He reached out to the estate of George and Ira Gershwin for permission to create the show. Not only did he get permission, but he was able to get some insight on the brothers, their lives and their music from one of their surviving relatives.

“I initially slated it to only run a month because I had other commitments,” Sinesio said. “It did phenomenally. The show sold out for four months and it gave me the money to do book shows.

“When they moved ACTS to Sharon, I asked if they wanted to do it.”

Performances are scheduled in the theater’s cabaret-style performance space on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The show originally was staged with four singers, but he doubled the cast size for this production with Connie Cassidy, Roxanne Chapman, Sam Early, Toni Schlemmer, Brad Townsend, John Woge, Susan Woge and Joe Spurio, who also serves as music director.

“I kept the same songs more or less, and just divided them among eight instead of four,” Sinesio said. “We go through their lives — some ‘Porgy & Bess’ stuff, some Broadway stuff, some Hollywood stuff.”

The singers will be accompanied by Jeanetta Plotner on piano and Stephen Ley on percussion, and Plotner will close the first act with a piano transcription of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” There are a variety of transcriptions available, and Sinesio said he let Plotner pick the one with which she was most comfortable.

The show includes such Great American Songbook favorites as “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” “How Long Has This Been Going On,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “Our Love Is Here to Stay,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Embraceable You.”

Sinesio said he also tried to include some less familiar songs and take a different approach to some of the well-known pieces.

“‘Fidgety Feet’ is one a lot of people don’t know,” he said. “It’s a very silly, funny song, not a typical Gershwin song. And I combined ‘Fascinating Rhythm’ and ‘I’ve Got Rhythm.’ I intercut them and did them like a tug of war with the guy singing ‘Fascinating Rhythm’ and the girl singing ‘I’ve Got Rhythm.’ They go back and forth and then combine them in the end.”
